Another tough conference game tonight, against 3rd place FV. This game was delayed by thunderstorms, but the weather eventually clearing into a sunny and hot afternoon.
The game was well pitched, with GH's Joe Pistacchio going the distance and besting FV's Travis Long. GH had a few more scoring chances than FV, but couldn't get that clutch hit, while FV's chances were stymied by some good GH defensive plays.
Pistacchio wasn't over-powering tonight (only 3 strikeouts), but was very efficient, throwing almost 80% strikes. GH's defense was very good tonight, highlighted by outfield catches from Adam Boghosian in right and David Josam in center. The infield contributed by turning a key double play and Pistacchio made a nice play on a slow chopper towards 3rd.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th, with 1 out, Nolan Poythress singled to right, followed by Josam's single and a infield out, had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. With the runner on 1st (Jeff Weygandt) running on the pitch, Shambley hit a grounder up the middle that the 2B's diving attempt at, was not fielded cleanly, scoring Poythress from 3rd. Max Povse followed with a single to LF, and scored Weygandt from 2nd, as Jeff beat the throw home. GH up 2-0 after 4 innings.
FV had chances in the last 3 innings, but came up empty until the 7th. Aaron Olive ledoff with a double to center, and advanced to 3rd on an infield out, and scored on another infield out. But that's all scoring in this game, GH wins 2-1.
GH moves to 10-2 in the conference, tied with Middle for 1st, and 18-4 overall.
Grant Shambley drives in a run with this grounder, Jeff Weygandt is safe at 2nd, as FV's 2B can't field the ball cleanly
Then Max Povse singles to drive in Jeff Weygandt from 2nd, as Jeff had to run hard to beat the throw from LF
In 6th, GH turns a key double play - Eric Brady to Grant Shambley to Max Povse
