Matt Cossa Memorial

Matt Cossa

In the spring of 2006, Matt Cossa (GHHS ’03) lost his battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Matt was a four year starter with the Green Hope High School baseball team and a vital part of the success of that program. He still owns Green Hope career records in stolen bases and runs scored.

In the spring of 2007, Matt’s family, former coaches, teammates, and friends gathered at the Green Hope baseball field to celebrate his life, his love of baseball, and to raise money to fight the disease which took his life.

The inaugural Matt Cossa Memorial included a baseball game between Green Hope and Southeast Raleigh high schools, a “friends & family” softball game, a silent auction, raffles, concessions, and other special events. With an estimated 375 attending, the event raised $12,000 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Eastern North Carolina.

The 2nd annual Matt Cossa Memorial took place on April 19th 2008 at the Green Hope High School baseball field. The event featured a baseball game in which Green Hope played Southeast Raleigh. The day also included a “friends and family” softball game, a silent auction, raffles, concessions, and other special events.

Over $22,000 from this event was donated in Matt’s memory to the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he received treatment. The funds raised will remain in our region and go directly towards the mission of curing lymphoma, leukemia, and other blood cancers.

From the third event in 2009, the Cossa family presented Dr. David Rizzieri of Duke's Comprehensive Cancer Center with a check for $26,500 !!!
